Im confused over Light yagami's name from death note?

ok so his name is light yagami but light in japanese is raito so why in the movies do people say light insted of raito? or is it just about the kanjis because in the movie The last name i had the japanese audio and english subtitles and misa said its not said as lite but as light so is his name light as in a made up name or light as in like light from a lightbulb ? and i think i get how his name is written with the kanji for moon like the kanji alone would be moon but with the kanjis for yagami with it it would be lite? i think im right but im still not sure
